What does it mean?
B1889 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Power Liftgate Pinch Sensor 1 Circuit High .
Symptoms
- Power operation of the liftgate is disabled as a safety measure
- Gate must be opened and closed by hand, and the button or remote is ignored
- Warning beeps when power operation is requested
- Fault appears immediately after rear body repair, tail lamp work or trim removal
- Anti trap protection is not available, so the module refuses to run the motor
Likely causes
- Pinch sensor strip severed or internally broken, often at a fixing point
- Strip connector unplugged or left disconnected after body, trim or glass work
- Terminating resistor open or missing at the end of the strip
- Broken conductor in the harness where it flexes through the hinge conduit
- Corroded terminals in the strip connector after water ingress
- Signal wire open where the loom passes through a body grommet
- Liftgate control module input fault
How to fix it
- Read the module codes and identify which pinch sensor loop is open
- Check first that both ends of the strip are actually connected, since a connector left unplugged after trim work is a common cause
- Measure the resistance of the strip end to end and compare it with the opposite side and with the specification
- Inspect the strip along its whole length for a break at a mounting point or where it enters the body
- Flex the harness at the hinge conduit and grommet while watching the reading to reveal an intermittent open
- Clean or repair corroded terminals with the correct parts, then reseat the connector fully
- Replace the liftgate module only after the strip and wiring have been verified
