First step

With the vehicle stationary and level, read the yaw rate value; it should sit at or very close to zero

What does it mean?

C1280 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: Yaw Rate Sensor In SAS Control Module Is Signal Error .

Symptoms

  • Stability and traction lamps on with ESP disabled
  • Unexpected braking or steering correction while cornering
  • Yaw rate value stuck, drifting or not returning to zero when the vehicle is stationary
  • ABS warning lamp often lit at the same time
  • Steering angle and yaw data clearly disagree on the scan tool

Likely causes

  • Internal fault of the yaw rate element built into the steering angle sensor control module
  • Zero point lost after a battery disconnection, module reset or accident repair
  • Module mounting loose so vibration corrupts the yaw signal
  • Poor power supply or ground at the control module
  • Corroded connector or damaged harness at the module
  • CAN communication errors so the yaw message is received incorrectly
  • Water intrusion at the module location, often after a leak into the cabin

How to fix it

  1. With the vehicle stationary and level, read the yaw rate value; it should sit at or very close to zero
  2. Check the module mounting bolts and inspect the area for water ingress
  3. Measure module supply voltage and ground with a voltage drop test
  4. Check the CAN circuits at the module for correct resistance and signal quality
  5. Perform the zero point and steering angle calibration after any battery or module work
  6. Road test and confirm the yaw value tracks the direction and rate of a steady turn
  7. Replace and calibrate the control module when the internal sensor stays faulty
