What does it mean?
C1285 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: Sensor Cluster Change Detection/Uncalibrated .
Symptoms
- Stability and traction lamps on, usually straight after a repair
- ESP and traction functions disabled while normal braking still works
- Code returns immediately after clearing until the calibration is completed
- Yaw and lateral values do not sit at zero with the vehicle stationary and level
- No wiring or circuit codes stored alongside it
Likely causes
- Yaw and lateral sensor cluster replaced without running the calibration routine
- Control module or steering angle sensor renewed and the learned values never written
- Calibration data lost after a battery disconnection or a low voltage event
- Cluster refitted in the wrong orientation or with loose mounting bolts
- A cluster with a different part number fitted that does not match the module configuration
- Calibration routine aborted before the conditions were met
- Faulty cluster that cannot store the calibration
How to fix it
- Confirm the fitted cluster part number matches the vehicle configuration
- Check that the cluster is fitted the correct way round and its bolts are tight
- Park on level ground with the wheels straight and the engine running before starting the routine
- Complete the steering angle calibration first where the manufacturer sequence requires it
- Run the sensor cluster calibration with a scan tool that supports the function, keeping voltage stable
- Carry out any required drive-cycle relearn afterwards
- Replace the cluster if it will not accept or retain the calibration
