What does it mean?

C1281 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: Lateral Acceleration Sensor Circuit Malfunction .

Symptoms

  • Stability and traction lamps illuminated with the systems disabled
  • Lateral acceleration value in live data missing, stuck or clearly implausible
  • Unexpected or missing brake intervention when cornering
  • Hill hold and all wheel drive support functions inoperative
  • ABS lamp may also be on

Likely causes

  • Open, short or high resistance in the lateral acceleration sensor supply, ground or signal wiring
  • Corroded or water-damaged connector at the sensor, usually located under the console or a seat
  • Harness damage from seat rails, floor mats or a water leak into the cabin
  • Loss of the 5 V reference or a poor sensor ground
  • Sensor mounting loose or misaligned after interior work
  • Internal sensor failure
  • Stability control module input fault

How to fix it

  1. Locate the sensor and inspect the connector for moisture, corrosion and loose terminals
  2. With the vehicle stationary and level, check that the lateral value reads close to zero
  3. Measure the 5 V reference and ground at the sensor connector with the ignition on
  4. Disconnect the sensor and test each circuit back to the module for open, short to ground and short to voltage
  5. Road test and confirm the value swings symmetrically for left and right turns
  6. Check the mounting bolts and the fitted orientation of the sensor
  7. Replace the sensor and run the zero point calibration once the wiring is proven good
