What does it mean?
C1286 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: Booster Motor Circuit Malfunction . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.
Symptoms
- Hard, high brake pedal with reduced or no power assist, so extra pedal effort is needed and stopping distances grow
- Red brake warning lamp with ABS and stability lamps
- Motor silent when it should run, or running loudly and continuously
- Pedal feel changes noticeably between stops
- ABS and stability control disabled
Likely causes
- Worn brushes or a seizing armature in the brake booster pump motor
- Open or shorted motor supply or ground wiring at the booster assembly
- Excessive motor current draw blowing the high-current fuse
- Corroded or water-damaged connector at the booster motor
- Poor ground connection for the motor
- Relay contacts unable to carry the motor current
- Failed motor driver or output stage in the control module
How to fix it
- Treat reduced assist as a safety issue and verify braking performance before returning the vehicle to use
- Check the high-current fuse and the motor relay first
- Command the motor with the scan tool and measure voltage at the motor connector during the run
- Carry out a voltage drop test on both the supply and ground sides while the motor runs
- Measure the motor current draw and compare it with the specification
- Inspect the connector for corrosion and the harness for chafing near the booster
- Replace the pump motor or booster assembly once the supply, ground and control circuits test good
