What does it mean?
P1090 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Oil Pressure Switch Performance . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on, sometimes with the oil pressure warning lamp behaving inconsistently
- Oil pressure warning that flickers at idle and goes out as revs rise
- Ticking or knocking from the top end, particularly on a hot engine at idle
- Variable valve timing codes or delayed cam response stored alongside
- Cylinder deactivation or start-stop functions disabled on equipped vehicles
- No warning at all in some cases, with only the stored code as evidence
Likely causes
- Genuinely low oil level or oil that has been diluted or badly degraded
- Clogged oil filter or a blocked pick-up screen restricting flow
- Sticking switch contacts that change state late or not at all
- Oil of the wrong viscosity for the engine, giving pressures outside the expected window
- High resistance in the switch wiring or a poor ground at the switch body
- Worn oil pump or excessive bearing clearance lowering real pressure at idle
- Blocked oil gallery or a stuck pressure relief valve
How to fix it
- Check the oil level and condition before any electrical testing — this code can be reporting a real problem
- Fit a mechanical oil pressure gauge in place of the switch and compare actual pressure at idle and at raised revs with the specification
- Compare the switch state in live data with the mechanical gauge reading to see whether the switch is telling the truth
- Renew the oil and filter with the correct grade if the oil is old, thin or contaminated with fuel
- Inspect the switch connector and its wiring for corrosion, and voltage-drop test the ground path
- Replace the oil pressure switch if the mechanical pressure is correct but the reported state is wrong
- If real pressure is low, investigate the pick-up screen, relief valve, pump and bearing clearances before returning the engine to service
