What does it mean?
P1097 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Tumble Generated Valve Signal 2 Circuit Malfunction (short) .
Symptoms
- Check engine light on, frequently with the matching signal 1 or position sensor code
- Unstable idle and vibration, worst during warm-up
- Weak response and a stumble at part throttle
- Higher fuel consumption and a noticeable smell from the exhaust after a cold start
- Slow warm-up and higher tailpipe emissions
- Misfire codes on individual cylinders in some cases
Likely causes
- Chafed signal wire touching the engine, the manifold or another grounded surface
- Corrosion or standing water inside the connector shorting adjacent pins
- Actuator or position sensor with an internal short across its winding
- Loom trapped and crushed during a previous intake removal
- Insulation melted by contact with a hot component or a heat shield that has come loose
- Module driver stage shorted, checked only after the harness and actuator are cleared
How to fix it
- Note the freeze frame and check whether the fault appears only when the engine moves under load, which points at a chafe
- Disconnect the actuator and measure resistance from the signal wire to ground; a low value confirms a shorted harness
- Check the actuator or sensor resistance across its own terminals and against its housing to find an internal short
- Inspect the loom under and around the intake for crushed, melted or worn insulation and repair it properly
- Dry, clean and reseal any connector showing moisture or corrosion
- Confirm the flaps move freely by hand and are not binding on carbon
- Replace the faulty actuator or repair the harness, then verify correct flap movement and clear the code
