What does it mean?
P1096 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Tumble Generated Valve Signal 2 Circuit Malfunction (open) .
Symptoms
- Check engine light on and the intake flaps stuck in one position
- Lumpy idle when the engine is cold and a slow, uneven warm-up
- Reduced low-speed response and a hesitation when pulling away
- Increased fuel consumption
- Emissions higher than normal, with a possible test failure
- Little or no complaint once the engine is fully warm, which makes the fault easy to overlook
Likely causes
- Broken wire in the loom between the actuator and the module, often at a flex point
- Connector unplugged, unlatched or with a terminal that has backed out of its housing
- Corroded terminals that have lost contact entirely
- Open winding inside the actuator or an internally failed position sensor
- Damage from rodents or from a previous repair that cut the circuit
- Missing ground connection on the actuator side
- Module output driver open, considered only when the wiring is proven
How to fix it
- Check the commanded and actual flap position in live data; a value that never moves supports an open circuit
- Unplug the connector and check for supply voltage and a good ground with the ignition on
- Test continuity of the signal wire from the actuator connector back to the module pin
- Measure the actuator or sensor across its terminals — an infinite reading confirms an internal open
- Inspect the connector housing for pushed-back terminals and broken locks
- Follow the harness for breaks at bends, clips and any point where it moves with the engine
- Repair the broken wire or renew the actuator, then verify the flaps sweep fully with the ignition on
