Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Read the freeze frame and note load and boost when the fault set

  • 89Sequence number

What does it mean?

P1289 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Turbocharger Bypass Valve Short to Ground .

Symptoms

  • MIL (check engine lamp) on
  • Low or no boost, sluggish acceleration and poor drivability
  • Bypass valve stuck open, with an audible hiss or air leak sound under load
  • Engine dips or stalls when the throttle is closed quickly
  • Repeated fuse failures if the circuit is protected by its own fuse

Likely causes

  • Control wire pinched or chafed against the engine block, a bracket or body metal
  • Solenoid winding shorted internally to the valve body
  • Water, coolant or road salt in the valve connector
  • Broken harness clip letting the wire rest on a hot or sharp surface
  • Corroded terminal bridging the control pin to a ground or shield pin
  • Control module driver failed in the shorted state, checked last

How to fix it

  1. Read the freeze frame and note load and boost when the fault set
  2. Command the valve with the scan tool and watch whether the actual boost reacts
  3. Unplug the valve, key on, and test the control wire for continuity to ground
  4. Measure solenoid resistance and check for continuity between the winding and the valve body
  5. Wiggle-test the harness along its whole route while monitoring the code status
  6. Repair the pinch or chafe point and re-secure the harness in its clips; replace the valve if it is internally shorted
  7. Clear codes and verify boost control on a road test
