What does it mean?
P1446 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Leak Detection Pump Solenoid Circuit Malfunction .
Symptoms
- MIL on and the EVAP readiness monitor never completes
- No solenoid click or pump activity during the leak test that normally runs after shutdown
- Additional EVAP codes stored, sometimes including false leak reports
- Occasional fuel vapour smell when a genuine leak also goes unnoticed
- No effect on engine power or fuel consumption
Likely causes
- Open or shorted control wire between the PCM and the leak detection pump solenoid
- Corroded connector at the pump assembly, which is mounted low and exposed to road spray
- Internally open or shorted solenoid winding inside the pump unit
- Blown fuse or failed relay supplying the pump assembly
- Poor ground for the pump, giving unstable current flow
- Solenoid seized by dirt or corrosion so it cannot change position
- Damaged underbody harness from road debris or salt corrosion
How to fix it
- Command the leak detection pump solenoid with a scan tool and listen for it changing position
- Inspect the connector and underbody harness for corrosion, water and physical damage
- Check the fuse and relay feeding the assembly, then verify supply voltage at the connector with the key on
- Measure the solenoid winding resistance and compare against specification
- Test the control wire for continuity to the PCM and for a short to ground with both ends disconnected
- Perform a voltage drop test on the pump ground connection
- Replace the leak detection pump assembly once the supply, ground and control wiring are proven, then rerun the EVAP monitor
