What does it mean?
P1448 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: EVAP Canister Vent Control Valve Malfunction (Open) .
Symptoms
- MIL on with the EVAP readiness monitor incomplete
- System never builds or holds vacuum during the leak test, often reported as a large leak
- Fuel vapour smell around the rear of the vehicle in some cases
- Filler cap removal produces no hiss, since the tank is always vented
- No noticeable change in engine performance
Likely causes
- Vent valve mechanically jammed open by dirt, dust or carbon from the canister
- Failed vent valve solenoid that no longer closes when energised
- Open control circuit, so the valve never receives its closing command
- Corroded connector at the vent valve, which is mounted low near the canister
- Damaged or missing vent filter allowing debris to enter the valve
- Charcoal pellets escaping from a broken canister into the vent valve
- Water frozen inside the valve in cold weather, holding it open
How to fix it
- Command the vent valve closed with a scan tool and check whether the tank pressure value responds
- Remove the valve and confirm it seals when energised and opens when not
- Inspect the vent filter and hose for dirt, insects, mud and blockage
- Check the canister for broken internals releasing charcoal into the vent path
- Verify the control circuit: supply voltage, continuity to the PCM and correct resistance across the solenoid
- Inspect the connector for corrosion and water intrusion, cleaning or replacing as required
- Replace the vent valve if it will not seal, then run an EVAP monitor drive cycle to confirm the system now holds pressure
