What does it mean?
P1613 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: MIL Call-up Circuit Open/Short to B+ .
Symptoms
- MIL (check engine lamp) does not light during the key-on bulb check, or stays on permanently and will not go out
- Genuine engine faults go unnoticed because the lamp cannot warn the driver
- The vehicle fails a roadworthiness or emissions test on lamp function
- Other modules store their own codes at the same time
- In most cases engine performance is unchanged
- Other cluster warning lamps may behave oddly if the cluster is at fault
Likely causes
- Open circuit in the lamp request wire between the requesting module and the engine module or cluster
- The wire chafed against a live feed and shorted to battery positive
- Corroded or backed-out terminal at either connector end
- Failed bulb, LED or lamp driver circuit in the instrument cluster
- Faulty output stage in the requesting module holding the line high
- Aftermarket accessory or a repair splice tapped into the wrong wire
- Poor ground at the cluster or the requesting module
How to fix it
- Watch the lamp at key-on: no bulb check points to an open circuit, permanently lit points to a short to battery positive
- Disconnect both ends of the request line and check continuity end to end, then check for voltage on that wire with the ignition on
- Inspect both connectors for corrosion, pushed-back terminals and damaged seals
- Check the cluster side: bulb, LED and its driver circuit where the lamp is driven directly
- Command the lamp with the scan tool output test and observe whether it responds
- Repair the open circuit or the short to positive, then verify a normal bulb check at key-on
- Replace the requesting module or the cluster only after the wiring has been proven
