What does it mean?
P1614 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Electronic Throttle System Module Malfunction .
Symptoms
- MIL (check engine lamp) on with a reduced power warning
- Engine will not rev past a limited rpm, the pedal feels dead
- High, low or hunting idle, surging at steady throttle
- Delayed throttle response and sudden loss of power while driving
- Cruise control unavailable
- A buzzing or whirring from the throttle body at key-on, and sometimes stalling when lifting off
Likely causes
- Heavy carbon build-up in the throttle bore making the plate stick or bind
- Worn throttle position sensor track inside the throttle body, giving a dead spot
- Throttle motor winding open or shorted, or the motor drawing excessive current
- Corroded or water-damaged throttle body connector, chafed harness
- Low supply voltage or a poor ground at the throttle unit
- Collapsed 5 V reference shared with other sensors
- Internal failure of the electronic throttle module or the engine module driver stage
How to fix it
- Read live data and compare accelerator pedal position, commanded throttle angle and actual throttle angle
- Perform the key-on throttle sweep test and confirm the actual angle follows the command smoothly with no steps
- Remove the intake duct with the ignition off and check the plate for carbon and free movement
- Clean the bore carefully without forcing the plate, then run the throttle adaptation procedure
- Measure the throttle motor winding resistance and check the sensor tracks for dead spots
- Test the supply, ground, 5 V reference and both signal wires at the throttle connector
- Replace the throttle body assembly if the motor or sensors test bad, then complete the relearn
