What does it mean?
P1617 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Engine Oil Level Switch Circuit Malfunction Code .
Symptoms
- MIL (check engine lamp) on, and an oil level warning that appears with a correct level or never appears when the level is low
- Oil level display missing, dashed out or showing an implausible value
- Warning message flickering on and off over bumps or on cornering
- Service and oil life messages behaving strangely
- No performance change, but the real risk is an unnoticed low oil condition
- Warning appears immediately after an oil change on some vehicles
Likely causes
- Genuinely low engine oil level, which should always be checked first
- Oil level switch contacts stuck open or closed, or a float fouled with sludge
- Open circuit, short to ground or a corroded terminal in the switch wiring
- Harness damage near the sump or heat damage from the exhaust
- Oil or water intrusion into the switch connector
- Incorrect or non-matching switch fitted at a previous service
- Module input circuit fault, which is the least likely cause
How to fix it
- Check the oil level manually on level ground with the engine cold before trusting any electrical reading
- Watch the switch state in live data with the vehicle standing and again after a drive
- Inspect the connector at the sump for oil, corrosion, heat damage and pushed-back terminals
- Unplug the switch and check the signal wire for continuity and a short to ground, then briefly jumper the signal to ground and confirm the state changes on the scan tool
- Verify the ground and reference voltage at the switch connector
- Replace the switch or sensor with the correct part and a new seal once the wiring is proven
- Clear the code, fill with a known quantity of oil and confirm the reading tracks correctly
