What does it mean?
P1616 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: 5V Output Reference Voltage #1 Low .
Symptoms
- MIL (check engine lamp) on with several sensor codes at once: throttle position, pedal position, manifold pressure and other pressure sensors all reading implausibly
- Reduced power or limp mode
- Rough idle, hesitation, surging and stalling
- Gauges reading zero or sticking at an odd value
- Hard starting or long cranking
- Symptoms may come and go with vibration or wet weather
Likely causes
- One sensor on the shared reference circuit failed internally and is pulling the reference down
- Reference wire chafed and shorted to ground somewhere in the harness
- Water or corrosion inside a sensor connector bridging the reference to ground
- Harness pinched or damaged after a previous repair or engine removal
- Poor module ground making the reference appear low relative to the sensors
- Reference regulator inside the module failed
- Non-standard or incorrectly wired replacement sensor loading the circuit
How to fix it
- List every stored code; the group of sensors flagged together identifies which reference circuit is affected
- Measure the reference voltage at each sensor on that circuit with the ignition on; roughly 5 V is correct
- Disconnect those sensors one at a time and watch the reference recover; the one that restores 5 V is the shorted sensor
- With all of them unplugged and the module connector off, check the reference wire for continuity to ground
- Inspect the connectors for moisture, green corrosion, spread terminals and signs of previous repairs
- Repair the short or replace the failed sensor, then verify the reference stays at 5 V with everything reconnected
- Consider the module only if the reference remains low with every sensor disconnected
