What does it mean?
P1615 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Communication Error from Distance Control ECU to Engine Control Module (ECM) .
Symptoms
- MIL (check engine lamp) on together with an adaptive cruise or driver assistance warning in the cluster
- Cruise control cannot be engaged, or drops out during use
- Distance warning and collision warning functions disabled
- Loss-of-communication codes stored in several modules
- Message in the display asking the driver to clean the sensor
- Engine power normally unaffected
Likely causes
- Distance control module unpowered: blown fuse, open supply wire or a bad ground
- Bus wiring to the distance control module open, shorted or corroded
- Water ingress into the connector behind the grille or bumper, a very common failure point
- Radar or sensor unit internally failed
- Sensor knocked out of alignment or damaged after front-end impact or bumper work
- Software or coding mismatch after a module replacement
- Network fault affecting the whole bus segment, such as bad termination resistance
How to fix it
- Scan every module and note which ones report no communication; a shared pattern points to the bus, a single one to that module
- Check the fuse, supply voltage and ground at the distance control module
- Measure the bus lines at the module connector for correct resistance and for shorts to power or ground
- Inspect the connector behind the bumper or grille for water and corrosion, common after washing or a minor impact
- Look for accident damage, a loose bracket or a displaced sensor face
- Confirm the software levels of the assist and engine modules are compatible
- Repair the wiring, or replace and code the module, then carry out the sensor alignment procedure and verify function on a road test
