What does it mean?
P1702 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Malfunction cannot activate control module Replacement function, since another malfunction with equal priority is present .
Symptoms
- MIL on with a long list of stored codes rather than a single fault
- Limp mode, reduced power and fixed gear operation
- Erratic gauge readings and inconsistent driveability
- Several warning lights lit at the same time
- Fault behaviour changing noticeably from one drive to the next
- Engine or transmission responding unpredictably to driver input
Likely causes
- Two or more faults of equal priority stored at the same time, blocking the substitute value strategy
- Multiple sensor failures on the same circuit group, usually from a shared reference voltage or ground problem
- Corroded common ground point serving several sensors at once
- Harness damage affecting more than one circuit in the same loom
- Low system voltage from a failing battery or charging system upsetting several inputs together
- Control module internal fault or an out of date calibration
- Water intrusion into a connector carrying several sensor circuits
How to fix it
- Record the freeze frame data and the complete code list from every module before clearing anything
- Look for a common factor: a shared ground, a shared reference voltage, one connector carrying several circuits
- Test the battery, charging voltage and main ground straps first, since weak supply can set a group of faults at once
- Measure the reference voltage at several sensors; if they all read wrong, the fault is upstream of the sensors
- Clear the codes and drive the vehicle to see which fault returns first, as that one is usually the root cause
- Repair the highest priority genuine fault and re-scan; this code normally clears on its own afterwards
- Check the module calibration level and inspect its connectors for moisture and corrosion
