What does it mean?
P1706 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: A/T Transmission Range Switch Circuit No Gear Inputs .
Symptoms
- MIL on with a transmission warning light
- No gear position shown in the cluster, or every position shown at once
- Engine will not crank in park or neutral
- Transmission stuck in a default gear with harsh engagement
- Reverse lights inoperative
- Poor shift quality in every selector position
Likely causes
- All range switch input circuits open, often from one broken connector or a lost common feed
- Transmission range switch failed internally with badly worn contacts
- Range switch connector disconnected, corroded or full of water
- Broken shift linkage or cable so the switch never moves with the lever
- Loss of power or ground to the switch
- Harness damage where the loom runs along the transmission case
- Transmission module input circuit failure
How to fix it
- Watch the range switch inputs in live data while moving the selector through all positions; none of them changing confirms the code
- Check the fuse and confirm supply voltage is reaching the range switch
- Inspect the switch connector for corrosion, water and disconnected or pushed-out pins
- Verify that the linkage or cable actually moves the switch through its full travel
- Measure continuity through the switch at its connector in each selector position
- Replace the range switch if it does not switch cleanly in every position
- Repair the harness section, and inspect the module input only after the switch and wiring test good
