Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Monitor the park and neutral signal in live data while moving the selector slowly through park and neutral

What does it mean?

P1707 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Park/Neutral (P/N) switch circuit failure .

Symptoms

  • MIL on
  • Starter turns with the selector in a driving gear, or the engine will not crank in park
  • Reverse lights inoperative
  • Idle speed dipping or surging when drive is engaged
  • Cluster gear display wrong or missing
  • Fault appearing and disappearing over road bumps

Likely causes

  • Park and neutral switch contacts burnt or worn so the signal drops out
  • Switch out of adjustment after transmission, linkage or clutch work
  • Open or shorted wire between the switch and the module
  • Water, salt and road dirt corroding the switch connector
  • Broken or loose switch mounting bracket letting the switch shift position
  • Poor ground reference for the switch circuit
  • Starter interlock circuit fault feeding back into the same signal

How to fix it

  1. Monitor the park and neutral signal in live data while moving the selector slowly through park and neutral
  2. Check and adjust the switch position, since many switches are slotted for alignment
  3. Inspect the connector for corrosion and moisture, then clean it and protect it against water
  4. Measure switch continuity in park and neutral directly at its connector
  5. Test the circuit to the module for open, short to ground and short to battery conditions
  6. Check the switch mounting bracket and hardware for looseness or damage
  7. Replace the switch if the contacts are unreliable, then verify the starter interlock works correctly
