What does it mean?
P1705 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Park Neutral Output Circuit Malfunction (4L30-E) .
Symptoms
- MIL on with a transmission warning
- Engine cranks with the selector in a driving gear, or will not crank in park and neutral
- Reverse lights inoperative or staying on permanently
- Gear position display in the instrument cluster wrong or blank
- Harsh or wrong shift scheduling because the module does not know the selected range
- Vehicle starting only when the shift lever is nudged
Likely causes
- Open or shorted wire in the park and neutral output circuit
- Misadjusted or internally worn transmission range switch
- Corroded terminals or water inside the range switch connector, which sits low on the transmission
- Failed output driver inside the transmission module
- Worn or misadjusted shift linkage or cable, so the switch never reaches its detent position
- Poor ground for the switch or the module
- Fault in the starter relay circuit that shares this signal
How to fix it
- Compare the actual lever position with the range value shown in live data through every gear
- Inspect and, where the design allows, adjust the transmission range switch to its correct position
- Check the shift cable or linkage for stretch, wear and proper adjustment
- Inspect the switch connector for corrosion and moisture, then clean and reseat it
- Measure the output circuit for continuity, shorts to ground and shorts to battery positive
- Replace the range switch if its output does not track the lever correctly through all positions
- Repair the harness section if the circuit is damaged, and consider the module only afterwards
