What does it mean?
P3401 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Cylinder 1 Deactivation Solenoid Control Circuit .
Symptoms
- Malfunction indicator lamp on, often together with misfire codes for cylinder 1
- Misfire or a distinct stumble as the engine switches cylinders on or off
- Ticking or clattering from the top of the engine
- Rough idle and reduced power
- Fuel economy gets worse because cylinder deactivation is disabled
- Engine may run permanently on all cylinders with no economy mode
Likely causes
- Low engine oil level or the wrong oil viscosity; the deactivation system is hydraulically operated and depends on correct oil
- Sludge or varnish blocking the oil passage or the screen feeding the deactivation lifter
- Open or short in the solenoid control circuit inside the engine harness
- Failed solenoid coil, or a solenoid plunger stuck by debris
- Oil-contaminated or corroded connector near the valley cover or cylinder head
- Collapsed or stuck deactivation lifter, sometimes with a worn camshaft lobe
- Failed driver circuit in the PCM (Powertrain Control Module)
How to fix it
- Check engine oil level, condition and grade first — this system will not work correctly on low or wrong oil
- Read all stored codes, including misfire codes, and note the freeze frame conditions
- Inspect the solenoid connector for oil intrusion, corrosion and loose terminals
- Measure solenoid resistance and test the control circuit for open, short to ground and short to voltage
- Command the solenoid with a bidirectional scan tool and watch the current or listen for it to click
- Measure actual oil pressure and inspect the oil control manifold screens for debris
- Replace the solenoid or the lifter oil manifold; inspect the lifter and cam lobe if a mechanical fault is suspected
