What does it mean?

P3406 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Cylinder 1 Exhaust Valve Control Circuit Performance . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.

Symptoms

  • Malfunction indicator lamp on, usually once the engine reaches operating temperature
  • Rough running or brief misfire as the valve control switches state
  • Distinct tick from the valvetrain that changes with engine load
  • Loss of power and a noticeable flat spot under light acceleration
  • Higher fuel consumption because the module disables the function
  • Fault often returns shortly after a code clear if the oil issue is untreated

Likely causes

  • Low oil pressure or the wrong oil viscosity preventing full actuator travel
  • Sludge or debris restricting the oil feed to the exhaust valve actuator
  • Solenoid sticking or reacting too slowly because of varnish build-up
  • High resistance in the control circuit reducing the current to the solenoid
  • Clogged screen in the oil control manifold
  • Worn actuator, lifter or camshaft lobe on the exhaust side
  • Extended oil change intervals leaving deposits in the control valve

How to fix it

  1. Check oil level, grade and service history first; an overdue oil change is a common root cause
  2. Measure oil pressure at idle and at higher rpm and compare with specification
  3. Compare commanded and actual valve control state in live data during a road test
  4. Measure solenoid resistance and check the control circuit for excessive voltage drop
  5. Remove and clean the oil control manifold screens, or replace the manifold if it is heavily contaminated
  6. Change the oil and filter with the specified viscosity, then re-evaluate before replacing parts
  7. Replace the solenoid, and inspect the actuator, lifter and cam lobe if the fault persists
