What does it mean?

P3403 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Cylinder 1 Deactivation/Intake Valve Control Circuit Low . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.

Symptoms

  • Malfunction indicator lamp on, usually with the cylinder deactivation system disabled
  • Valvetrain tick or tap on the affected bank
  • Misfire and a rough-running engine if the fault occurs while the cylinder is deactivated
  • Loss of power and an unsettled idle
  • Fuel economy drops because the economy mode is no longer used
  • Fault may be intermittent and appear with engine movement or vibration

Likely causes

  • Control wire chafed to ground against the valley cover, a bracket or the cylinder head
  • Solenoid winding shorted internally, pulling the circuit low
  • Oil-soaked connector bridging the control pin to a ground pin
  • Harness pinched under the intake manifold or an engine cover
  • Damaged terminal making unintended contact inside the connector
  • Loss of the solenoid supply through a blown fuse or open feed wire
  • Low-side driver in the PCM stuck on and holding the circuit at ground

How to fix it

  1. Check engine oil level and condition before anything else, since this system is oil-driven
  2. Disconnect the solenoid and see whether the code changes to a high or open-circuit code — that points to the solenoid
  3. Measure solenoid winding resistance and its resistance to engine ground
  4. With the solenoid unplugged, check the control wire for continuity to ground to confirm a harness short
  5. Inspect the connector for oil intrusion and replace the seal or the pigtail if oil has wicked in
  6. Repair the chafed or pinched harness section and re-route it away from sharp edges
  7. Replace the solenoid if it tests shorted; consider the PCM only after wiring and solenoid are proven good
