What does it mean?
P3404 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Cylinder 1 Deactivation/Intake Valve Control Circuit High . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.
Symptoms
- Malfunction indicator lamp on and cylinder deactivation permanently disabled
- Valvetrain tick or tap, particularly noticeable at idle
- Misfire and rough running if the cylinder is left in the wrong state
- Reduced power and a slightly unsettled idle
- Higher fuel consumption on steady cruising because the economy mode is unavailable
- The fault can be intermittent and set only when the engine is hot or under vibration
Likely causes
- Open in the solenoid control or feed circuit
- Solenoid coil open internally so no load is present for the driver
- Corroded, spread or backed-out terminal at the solenoid connector
- Control wire chafed against a permanently powered circuit
- Blown fuse or an open feed to the solenoid supply
- Broken conductor where the engine harness flexes with engine movement
- Failed driver stage in the PCM
How to fix it
- Check oil level and condition first, then read all codes and freeze frame data
- Measure the solenoid winding resistance — an open reading confirms a failed coil
- Check continuity from the PCM pin to the solenoid pin and perform a voltage-drop test on the feed
- With the key on and the solenoid unplugged, look for unexpected battery voltage on the control wire
- Test the terminals for tension and inspect the connector for oil and corrosion
- Repair the open or shorted harness section and secure the harness against further chafe
- Replace the solenoid, clear the codes and confirm the deactivation system now cycles normally
