What does it mean?

P3405 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Cylinder 1 Exhaust Valve Control Circuit/Open . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.

Symptoms

  • Malfunction indicator lamp on with the variable valve or deactivation function disabled
  • Ticking or tapping from the valvetrain on the affected cylinder
  • Misfire and rough running, most noticeable when the system tries to switch modes
  • Loss of power and a coarse idle
  • Fuel economy worse than usual on steady driving
  • Fault may set only when the engine bay is hot

Likely causes

  • Open conductor in the solenoid control or supply wire
  • Solenoid coil failed open internally
  • Corroded, oil-contaminated or loose connector at the solenoid
  • Terminal backed out of the connector body from vibration and heat
  • Harness damage where it runs close to the exhaust side of the engine
  • Poor ground path for the solenoid circuit
  • Failed output driver in the PCM

How to fix it

  1. Check engine oil level and condition, since these valve control systems depend on oil pressure
  2. Read all codes and note whether misfire codes for the same cylinder are present
  3. Inspect the solenoid connector for oil, corrosion and terminals that have backed out
  4. Measure the solenoid winding resistance and compare it with specification
  5. Check continuity from the PCM connector to the solenoid and inspect the harness where it passes near hot components
  6. Wiggle-test the harness with the engine running while watching for the code to reset
  7. Repair the open circuit or replace the solenoid; inspect the mechanical actuator if the circuit tests good
