What does it mean?
B1439 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Side impact sensor (LH) (squib) for communication system .
Symptoms
- Airbag warning lamp on and staying on after the initial bulb check
- Left side and curtain protection disabled and unavailable in a collision
- Fault may be intermittent, appearing over rough roads or in wet weather
- Code usually appears soon after interior work on that side of the car
- No noise, no warning message beyond the lamp, and normal driving otherwise
Likely causes
- Open circuit or high resistance in one of the two communication wires between module and sensor
- Water damaged connector under the left sill or pillar trim, a very common origin of this fault
- Connector left unlatched after seat, carpet or trim removal
- Sensor internally faulty and no longer responding to the module
- Loose sensor mounting bolts leaving the unit poorly referenced to the body
- Incorrect replacement sensor that cannot answer the module protocol
- Restraint control module port for the satellite sensors at fault
How to fix it
- Turn off the ignition, disconnect the battery and wait the specified discharge time before touching restraint connectors
- Lift the left sill trim, check for water and damp insulation and repair the leak before doing anything electrical
- Unplug the sensor and inspect both connector halves for corrosion, deformed terminals and an unengaged lock
- Measure continuity and resistance of both communication wires from the sensor to the restraint module, moving the loom while you measure
- Verify the mounting bolts are tight to specification on clean bare metal
- Swap the sensor with the matching one on the other side where part numbers allow to see whether the fault moves
- Fit a correct new sensor, complete any required configuration, clear the memory and confirm on a road test that the lamp stays out
