What does it mean?
P1363 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Cylinder 3 Ignition Circuit Short to Ground .
Symptoms
- Cylinder 3 misfires or is completely dead, with strong idle vibration
- Check engine light on and flashing during acceleration
- Clear reduction in power and poor throttle response
- Fuel smell from the exhaust and a risk of catalytic converter damage
- Rough, unstable idle that may be worse in wet conditions
Likely causes
- Control wire rubbed through against the head, a bracket or a cable clip
- Coil for cylinder 3 shorted internally to its own body
- Oil in the spark plug well from a leaking valve cover gasket, contaminating the coil connector
- Harness melted where it passes an exhaust component or turbocharger housing
- Water intrusion into the connector after washing or driving through standing water
- Terminal backed out of the plug and touching a grounded surface
- Module coil driver damaged by the persistent short
How to fix it
- Unplug the cylinder 3 coil and measure from the control wire to ground; a very low resistance confirms the short
- Inspect the plug well and connector for oil and water, clean the area and address any valve cover leak
- Test the coil between its control terminal and body to check for an internal ground fault
- Trace the harness from coil to module, looking closely at clips, brackets and hot zones
- Repair the damaged wiring with heat-resistant insulation and secure the loom away from the source of damage
- Confirm normal switching on the control line with a scope or test light before fitting new parts
- Replace the coil if it is internally shorted and reassess the module only once the external circuit is clean
