What does it mean?
P1366 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Ignition Coilpack A Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction Open Circuit/Short to Ground .
Symptoms
- Misfire on the paired cylinders that coilpack A serves, felt as a heavy shake at idle
- Check engine light on and flashing when the misfire is severe
- Loss of power and hesitation, usually worst under load or in damp weather
- Fuel smell from the exhaust and higher fuel consumption
- Crackling or snapping noises from the ignition area at night, indicating secondary arcing
Likely causes
- Internal failure in the coilpack, either an open primary winding or a broken secondary section
- Cracked coilpack housing or tracking marks letting the secondary voltage arc to ground
- Damaged, split or oil-soaked spark plug leads or boots on the pack
- Worn spark plugs with excessive gap, raising secondary demand until the pack breaks down
- Open or grounded control wire between the module and the coilpack
- Corroded coilpack connector or a loose mounting that compromises the ground path
- Module driver failure, considered after the pack, leads and wiring are checked
How to fix it
- Inspect the coilpack, its leads and boots in a dark area with the engine running to spot arcing to ground
- Remove and examine the spark plugs on the affected cylinders for wear, fouling and correct gap
- Measure the primary and secondary resistance of coilpack A and compare with specification
- Check the spark plug leads for correct resistance and for breaks in the insulation
- Test the control circuit between the module and the pack for continuity and for a short to ground
- Verify the coilpack mounting and ground path are clean and tight
- Replace the coilpack or leads according to test results, then confirm the misfire counters return to zero
