Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Operate the switch while watching its state in live data; the value should toggle cleanly each time

What does it mean?

P1710 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: A/T First Hold Switch Circuit Malfunction .

Symptoms

  • MIL on with a transmission warning light
  • First gear hold function not working, or engaging when it was never selected
  • Indicator lamp for the hold function stuck on, or never lighting
  • Shift pattern changing unexpectedly during normal driving
  • Otherwise normal transmission operation in most cases
  • Fault that follows pressing or moving the console switch

Likely causes

  • Faulty first hold switch with worn, dirty or intermittent contacts
  • Open or shorted wire between the switch and the transmission module
  • Corroded connector at the switch or in the centre console harness
  • Poor ground for the switch circuit
  • Liquid spilled into the console reaching the switch or its connector
  • Loose or damaged console harness after interior trim work
  • Transmission module input circuit fault

How to fix it

  1. Operate the switch while watching its state in live data; the value should toggle cleanly each time
  2. Remove the switch and test its continuity in both positions with a multimeter
  3. Inspect the console connector for corrosion, spilled liquid and loose or backed-out pins
  4. Check the circuit between switch and module for open and short to ground conditions
  5. Voltage drop test the switch ground circuit
  6. Replace the switch if it does not toggle reliably
  7. Repair the harness if the circuit is damaged, then clear the code and re-test the function
