What does it mean?
P1716 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Steering Wheel Angle Sensor-Input Signal Malfunction .
Symptoms
- MIL on together with stability control, traction control and sometimes power steering warnings
- Stability and traction control disabled
- Electric power steering assist reduced, or uneven from left to right
- Steering feeling heavier in one direction than the other
- Lane keeping and other driver assistance features switched off
- Steering angle in live data not matching the actual wheel position
Likely causes
- Steering angle sensor not calibrated after an alignment, steering rack, clock spring or suspension repair
- Failed steering angle sensor inside the clock spring assembly
- Damaged or broken clock spring wiring behind the steering wheel
- Open, shorted or high-resistance wiring between the sensor and the receiving module
- Corroded or loose connector under the steering column
- Communication fault with the module that reads the steering angle value
- Battery disconnection or low voltage clearing the sensor zero point
How to fix it
- Read the steering angle in live data with the wheels perfectly straight; it should be at or very near zero
- Perform the steering angle sensor calibration procedure with the scan tool first, since many of these faults are just a lost calibration
- Check for an alignment problem, because an off-centre steering wheel will keep setting the code
- Inspect the clock spring and the column connectors for damage, corrosion and loose pins
- Test the sensor supply voltage, ground and signal circuits at the connector
- Scan the wheel speed sensors and the stability control module for related codes
- Replace the steering angle sensor or the clock spring assembly if the signal stays invalid after a successful calibration attempt
