What does it mean?
P1717 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: A/T Transmission Range Switch Circuit Malfunction .
Symptoms
- MIL on with a transmission warning light
- Gear indicator showing more than one position, or the wrong one
- Transmission engaging a default gear with harsh shifts
- Engine cranking in gear, or refusing to crank in park
- Reverse lights behaving incorrectly
- Shift points clearly wrong for the selected range
Likely causes
- Short to ground or to battery positive on one of the range switch circuits
- Range switch failed internally, reporting two positions at the same time
- Corroded case connector letting adjacent pins bridge together
- Chafed harness along the transmission case grounding one of the circuits
- Water intrusion into the switch body itself
- Switch adjustment off, so it sits between two positions
- Module input circuit fault
How to fix it
- Watch every range switch input in live data through all selector positions and look for two circuits active at once
- Disconnect the switch and measure each circuit for a short to ground and a short to battery positive
- Inspect the harness where it runs along the transmission for chafing and heat damage
- Clean and inspect the case connector, looking for corrosion bridging adjacent pins
- Verify the switch adjustment and the full travel of the linkage or cable
- Bench test the switch contacts in every position with a multimeter
- Replace the switch if it shows overlapping or shorted contacts, and repair the harness before considering the module
