Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

What does it mean?

P1715 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Park/Neutral Position Switch Circuit .

Symptoms

  • MIL on
  • Engine cranks in gear, or refuses to crank in park and neutral
  • Idle speed dipping or flaring when drive is selected
  • Reverse lights inoperative or permanently on
  • Gear position display in the cluster missing or wrong
  • Cruise control or the shift interlock refusing to operate on some vehicles

Likely causes

  • Park and neutral position switch worn internally, giving an intermittent or wrong signal
  • Open, shorted or high-resistance wiring between the switch and the module
  • Corroded or waterlogged switch connector, which sits low and exposed on the transmission
  • Switch out of adjustment after clutch, linkage or transmission work
  • Broken or stretched shift cable so the switch never reaches its detent
  • Poor ground reference for the switch circuit
  • Module input circuit fault

How to fix it

  1. Watch the park and neutral input in live data while shifting slowly through every position
  2. Inspect and adjust the switch to its detent position where the design allows adjustment
  3. Check the shift cable or linkage for wear, stretch and correct adjustment
  4. Clean the connector and check for water and corrosion, then reseat it and protect it
  5. Test the circuit for continuity and shorts with the switch disconnected
  6. Bench test the switch contacts in each position with a multimeter
  7. Replace the switch if the contacts do not make cleanly, and repair harness damage before suspecting the module
