What does it mean?
P1711 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor Out Of Self Test Range .
Symptoms
- MIL on after a self test, often with no driving complaint at all
- Harsh or delayed shifts while the transmission is still cold
- Torque converter lock-up occurring too early or too late
- Transmission temperature in live data clearly wrong for the conditions
- Limp mode on some vehicles
- Cooling behaviour changing on designs that use this signal
Likely causes
- Transmission fluid temperature sensor drifted out of its specified resistance range
- High resistance in the sensor circuit from corroded terminals or a partly broken wire
- Self test carried out when the transmission was not at the required temperature, which is a procedure issue rather than a part failure
- Fluid intrusion into the case connector, wicking along the internal harness
- Low fluid level so the sensor is not properly immersed
- Damaged internal transmission harness or lead frame
- Module reference voltage or ground offset
How to fix it
- Confirm the self test conditions were met, with fluid temperature inside the specified window before the test was run
- After an overnight soak, compare fluid temperature, coolant temperature and ambient temperature; all three should read close together
- Check the fluid level and condition on level ground
- Measure the sensor resistance at the case connector against the temperature and resistance table
- Inspect the connector for fluid wicking, corrosion and bent or spread pins
- Check the module ground quality and the sensor reference voltage
- Replace the sensor or the internal harness assembly if the resistance is out of specification, then repeat the self test
