What does it mean?
P1831 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Pressure Control Solenoid Circuit Low Input (5L40-E) .
Symptoms
- Check engine lamp on with a transmission warning message
- Very firm, banging shifts because line pressure defaults high, or slipping shifts if pressure collapses
- Slipping under load with the engine flaring between gears
- The unit locks into limp mode and holds a single gear
- Poor drivability and rising fluid temperature
Likely causes
- Solenoid control wire shorted to ground inside the transmission, typically where the internal harness passes the valve body
- Solenoid winding shorted internally or its resistance collapsed after heat damage
- Fluid intrusion into the case connector bridging the solenoid circuit to ground
- Chafed external harness between the case connector and the module
- Debris from a worn clutch pack jamming the solenoid and overheating the coil
- Poor module ground shifting the reference for the driver circuit
- Module driver stage damaged by a solenoid short
How to fix it
- Read all codes and the freeze frame, then check fluid level, colour and smell, since burnt fluid changes the whole plan
- Inspect the external case connector for fluid wicking and corrosion, and the external harness for chafe
- Disconnect at the case connector and measure the solenoid resistance from the external side, comparing with specification
- Test the control wire between the module and the case connector for a short to ground with the solenoid disconnected
- Command the solenoid with the scan tool and watch the commanded versus actual pressure values
- Drop the pan, inspect for debris and check the internal harness and solenoid connector
- Replace the solenoid and any damaged internal harness, then verify line pressure with a gauge before returning the vehicle
