Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Chase an open circuit rather than a short with a high reading.

What does it mean?

P1838 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Internal Mode Switch A Circuit High Voltage .

Symptoms

  • Check engine lamp on with an incorrect or blank gear indicator
  • Transmission defaults to a fixed gear and engages with a bump
  • Start behaviour wrong: no crank in Park, or cranking in the wrong range
  • Reverse late, harsh or unavailable
  • Limp mode with clearly reduced drivability

Likely causes

  • Open circuit in the A wire between the mode switch and the module
  • Corroded or backed-out terminal at the transmission case connector
  • Contact track inside the mode switch worn through or burnt open
  • Internal harness broken, or its connector not fully latched after service
  • Mode switch ground path open, so none of the tracks can pull low
  • Mode switch assembly failed after high mileage
  • Module input circuit open internally

How to fix it

  1. Read the codes and observe every mode switch state as the selector is swept through its full travel
  2. Inspect the case connector for corrosion, fluid, backed-out pins and a loose lock
  3. Test the A circuit for continuity from the module connector to the case connector
  4. Ground the A circuit at the case connector and check whether the state changes on the scan tool; a change proves the harness is good
  5. Verify the mode switch ground circuit resistance
  6. Drop the pan and inspect the internal harness and the switch connector if the external side tests good
  7. Replace the mode switch, then sweep every range and confirm valid states throughout
