What does it mean?
P1835 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Kick Down Switch Circuit Low Input .
Symptoms
- Check engine lamp on with a transmission fault stored
- The transmission downshifts unexpectedly and holds low gears
- Engine revs high at steady cruise with the vehicle refusing to take the top gear
- Noticeable increase in fuel consumption and engine noise
- On some vehicles the kick down function stops working altogether
Likely causes
- Kick down switch stuck closed or its contacts welded together
- Switch wire shorted to ground where the harness runs behind the pedal box or under the carpet
- Water or cleaning fluid entering the footwell connector and corroding the pins
- Pedal stop or switch bracket bent so the switch is held down at rest
- Pedal linkage or floor mat pressing on the switch permanently
- Switch internally failed with a collapsed insulator
- Module input circuit damaged after a lasting short to ground
How to fix it
- Read the codes and watch the kick down switch state with the accelerator fully released
- Check the floor mat, pedal stop and switch bracket for anything holding the switch closed
- Unplug the switch and see whether the state changes; a state that stays active points at the harness
- Test the switch wire for a short to ground along its route behind the pedal box
- Inspect the connector for corrosion or moisture, which is common in the footwell
- Test switch continuity in the released and pressed positions with a meter
- Replace the switch or repair the wiring as required, then confirm the state toggles cleanly with pedal travel
