What does it mean?
P1833 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Pressure Control Solenoid Circuit Low Input (5L40-E) .
Symptoms
- Check engine lamp appearing after a period of driving rather than at start-up
- Shift feel changing from normal to very harsh or slipping as the transmission warms
- Engine flaring between gears under load
- Intermittent limp mode that clears after the vehicle cools and is restarted
- Higher fluid temperature and worsening drivability on longer trips
Likely causes
- Insulation on the solenoid control wire softened by heat and touching the case, grounding the circuit intermittently
- Solenoid coil breaking down only at operating temperature, so cold resistance measures normal
- Fluid slowly wicking into the case connector and creating a leakage path to ground
- Internal harness rubbing on the valve body or a pan magnet dragging against the wires
- Metal debris in the fluid partially shorting the solenoid terminals
- Weak module ground that worsens as connections corrode
- Module driver stage degraded by repeated overcurrent events
How to fix it
- Read the codes and freeze frame, and note the fluid temperature recorded when the fault set
- Check fluid level and condition; debris or a burnt smell shifts the focus to internal wear
- Measure solenoid resistance at the case connector both cold and at full operating temperature
- With the solenoid disconnected, test the control wire to ground while wiggling the external harness
- Graph commanded against actual line pressure during a road test that reproduces the fault
- Drop the pan and inspect the internal harness, the solenoid terminals and the pan magnet for debris
- Replace the solenoid and any damaged internal wiring, then verify line pressure with a gauge before release
