What does it mean?
P1839 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Internal Mode Switch C Circuit Low Voltage .
Symptoms
- Check engine lamp on with the wrong range shown or the display blank
- Wrong-gear starts and a firm bump on engagement
- Cranking possible in a range where it should be blocked
- Reverse or a forward range unavailable
- Limp mode, restricted shifting and poor drivability
Likely causes
- Internal harness chafed against the valve body or case, grounding the C wire
- Mode switch contact worn so the C track stays closed across several positions
- Fluid tracking between pins in the internal switch connector
- Switch out of alignment with the manual shaft after service, overlapping two tracks
- External harness rubbed through between the case connector and the module
- Failed mode switch assembly
- Module input circuit damaged after an uncorrected ground short
How to fix it
- Read the codes and log the mode switch states through a slow sweep of the selector
- Inspect the case connector for fluid, corrosion and terminal damage
- Disconnect the switch and test the C circuit to ground from the module side; a short with the switch unplugged means external wiring
- Check the external harness routing for chafe against brackets, the case and the exhaust
- If the external side is clean, drop the pan and inspect the internal harness and switch connector
- Verify switch alignment to the manual shaft before condemning the part
- Replace the mode switch and any damaged internal wiring, then confirm valid states in every range
