What does it mean?
P3430 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Cylinder 4 Exhaust Valve Control Circuit Performance . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.
Symptoms
- MIL (check engine lamp) usually lights once the engine reaches full temperature
- Rough running or a shudder as the system tries to change valve modes
- Intermittent cylinder 4 misfire that varies with oil temperature
- Load-dependent ticking or clatter from the cylinder head
- Loss of high rpm power and worse fuel economy
- Symptoms often ease briefly after fresh oil then return
Likely causes
- Low, contaminated or overdue engine oil, depriving the actuator of clean pressure
- Wrong oil grade for the engine, slowing the switching response
- Restricted oil feed, clogged screen or sludge inside the oil control valve
- Sticking or worn switching component in the cylinder 4 exhaust valve train
- Solenoid spool sticking from varnish deposits despite a healthy coil
- Oil pressure below specification because of a worn pump or a faulty pressure control solenoid
- Timing chain or valve train wear that shifts the mechanical response outside the expected window
How to fix it
- Inspect oil level and condition and confirm the correct grade was used at the last service
- Read freeze frame for the oil temperature, rpm and load when the fault set
- Use the scan tool to command the solenoid and watch for a change in engine behaviour or live data
- Measure oil pressure with a mechanical gauge, hot, at idle and at raised rpm
- Remove the solenoid and inspect its screen and bore for varnish, sludge and metal debris
- If the hydraulic circuit is sound, examine the cylinder 4 exhaust switching lifter and rocker hardware
- Complete an oil and filter change, then confirm over several warm-up cycles that the code stays away
