What does it mean?
P3436 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Cylinder 5 Deactivation/Intake Valve Control Circuit High . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.
Symptoms
- MIL (check engine lamp) on and the deactivation feature inhibited
- Fuel consumption rises, most noticeably during steady highway cruising
- Rough idle and vibration if the valve is stuck in one state
- Light knocking or ticking from the cylinder head
- Cylinder 5 misfire under light load
- Dull throttle response with occasional hesitation
Likely causes
- Short to battery voltage where the control wire runs next to a powered feed
- Open or high-resistance ground return leaving the output floating high
- Open coil inside the cylinder 5 deactivation solenoid so nothing loads the circuit
- Corroded or oil-contaminated terminals in the solenoid connector
- Water intrusion bridging a power pin to the control pin
- Failed driver stage in the PCM (powertrain control module), assessed last
How to fix it
- Save the freeze frame and try to reproduce the fault while commanding the output with a scan tool
- Inspect the solenoid connector for oil intrusion, corrosion and spread terminals
- Back-probe the control circuit with the key on and compare it with a healthy solenoid on the same bank
- Disconnect solenoid and module, then check the control wire for continuity to any power feed
- Measure the coil resistance; an open coil alone can create this high circuit reading
- Check the ground return path and terminal tension with a proper probe
- Repair the harness or renew the solenoid, then confirm the output switches cleanly on command
