What does it mean?
P3435 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Cylinder 5 Deactivation/Intake Valve Control Circuit Low . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.
Symptoms
- MIL (check engine lamp) on and often returning immediately after a clear
- Cylinder deactivation locked out, raising fuel consumption
- Rough idle and vibration that worsens as the system attempts to switch
- Ticking or knocking from the top of the engine
- Cylinder 5 misfire felt most at low rpm
- Some vehicles limit power and enter limp mode
Likely causes
- Control wire chafed through and grounding against the cylinder head, a bracket or a loom clip
- Solenoid winding shorted internally to its own case
- Oil or coolant in the connector bridging the control pin to ground
- Harness pinched under a cover, manifold or bracket after earlier work
- PCM output driver shorted on and holding the circuit low
- Poorly made splice or added wiring tapped into this circuit
How to fix it
- Confirm which physical solenoid corresponds to cylinder 5 on this engine before probing
- Check for other low-circuit codes on the same bank, which suggests shared harness damage
- Unplug the cylinder 5 solenoid and see whether the code changes to an open circuit fault
- With solenoid and module both disconnected, measure resistance from the control wire to engine ground
- Inspect the harness where it crosses metal edges, clips and brackets for rub-through and crush marks
- Compare the coil resistance against a known-good solenoid on the same engine
- Repair or reroute the damaged harness, or replace an internally shorted solenoid, then verify with commanded output tests and a road test
