What does it mean?
P3431 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Cylinder 4 Exhaust Valve Control Circuit Low . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.
Symptoms
- MIL (check engine lamp) on, usually returning quickly after a clear
- The exhaust valve stays in one state, leaving the engine flat under load
- Rough idle with vibration felt through the steering wheel and seat
- Constant valve train tick that does not respond to commanded changes
- Higher fuel consumption and possible cylinder 4 misfire
- Reduced power or limp mode on some vehicles
Likely causes
- Control wire chafed and shorted to ground against the head, a heat shield or a bracket
- Solenoid coil shorted internally to its housing
- Oil or water inside the connector creating a leakage path to ground
- Harness crushed or trapped under a component after earlier engine work
- Module driver shorted on and holding the output low all the time
- Poor previous repair or an added connection in this circuit that has grounded
How to fix it
- Look for companion low-circuit codes on the same bank, which suggest a common harness problem
- Unplug the cylinder 4 exhaust solenoid; a change to an open circuit code clears the solenoid
- With the solenoid and module disconnected, measure resistance from the control wire to engine ground
- Trace the harness carefully past clips, brackets and heat shields for chafe and crush damage
- Compare the coil resistance with an identical solenoid on the engine
- Repair or reroute the shorted harness, or replace the solenoid if it tests shorted
- Clear the code, command the solenoid with a scan tool and road test to confirm the circuit is stable
