What does it mean?
P3438 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Cylinder 5 Exhaust Valve Control Circuit Performance . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.
Symptoms
- MIL (check engine lamp) usually appears only after full warm-up
- Rough running or shudder while the system attempts to change valve modes
- Cylinder 5 misfire that comes and goes with oil temperature
- Ticking or clatter from the head that changes with engine load
- Reduced power at higher rpm and increased fuel consumption
- Symptoms may improve briefly after an oil service and then return
Likely causes
- Low or degraded engine oil, so the actuator lacks clean, stable pressure
- Oil viscosity outside the specified grade, slowing or preventing switching
- Restricted oil feed, clogged screen or sludge in the oil control valve bore
- Sticking or worn switching component in the cylinder 5 exhaust valve train
- Solenoid spool sticking from varnish even though the coil resistance is normal
- Oil pressure below specification from a worn pump or a faulty pressure control solenoid
- Valve train or chain wear moving the mechanical response outside the module's expected window
How to fix it
- Check the oil level and condition and verify the correct viscosity was used at the last service
- Read freeze frame data for the oil temperature, rpm and load when the code set
- Command the solenoid on and off with a scan tool and watch for any change in engine behaviour
- Take a mechanical oil pressure reading, engine hot, at idle and at raised rpm
- Remove the solenoid and inspect the screen and bore for varnish, sludge and metal debris; clean or renew
- If the oil circuit is sound, inspect the cylinder 5 exhaust switching lifter and rocker hardware for wear
- Finish with an oil and filter change, then confirm through several warm-up cycles that the code stays away
