What does it mean?
P3433 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Cylinder 5 Deactivation/Intake Valve Control Circuit/Open . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.
Symptoms
- MIL (check engine lamp) on with cylinder deactivation disabled
- Fuel consumption noticeably higher because reduced-cylinder mode never engages
- Rough idle and shake if the cylinder 5 valve remains collapsed
- Ticking or clacking from the cylinder head
- Cylinder 5 misfire, sometimes with accompanying misfire codes
- Slightly weaker throttle response
Likely causes
- Solenoid connector loose, unlatched or with a terminal pushed back in its housing
- Broken control wire, or an internal break hidden under the insulation
- Oil creeping up the harness and coating the terminal faces until contact is lost
- Open winding inside the cylinder 5 deactivation solenoid
- Blown fuse or open supply to the solenoid group on that bank
- Damaged under-manifold harness section, often disturbed during previous repairs
How to fix it
- Confirm the cylinder numbering and bank layout for the engine so you probe the right solenoid
- Read freeze frame and note whether the fault is active now or intermittent
- Unplug the cylinder 5 solenoid and inspect the terminals for oil, corrosion and push-back
- Measure the coil resistance at the solenoid; an infinite reading confirms an open winding
- Check control wire continuity to the module connector and verify supply voltage with the key on
- Wiggle the harness while monitoring resistance to expose an intermittent break
- Repair the wire or terminal, or fit a new solenoid, then command the output with a scan tool to verify it now draws current
