What does it mean?
P3439 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Cylinder 5 Exhaust Valve Control Circuit Low . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.
Symptoms
- MIL (check engine lamp) on, typically resetting soon after a clear
- Exhaust valve control fixed in its default state, leaving the engine flat
- Rough idle with vibration through the cabin
- Constant valve train ticking regardless of commanded changes
- Increased fuel consumption and possible cylinder 5 misfire
- Power limitation or limp mode on some vehicles
Likely causes
- Control wire chafed and shorted to ground on the head, a heat shield or a bracket
- Solenoid coil shorted internally to its housing
- Oil or moisture inside the connector creating a path to ground
- Harness pinched or crushed during previous engine work
- Module output driver shorted on, holding the circuit low continuously
- Previous repair splice in this circuit that has failed and grounded
How to fix it
- Look for other low-circuit codes on that bank, which usually indicate a shared harness fault
- Unplug the cylinder 5 exhaust solenoid; if the code becomes an open circuit fault, suspect the solenoid
- With both solenoid and module disconnected, measure resistance between the control wire and engine ground
- Follow the harness past every clip, bracket and heat shield looking for rub-through and crush damage
- Compare the coil resistance with an identical solenoid elsewhere on the engine
- Repair, reroute or replace the shorted harness section, or fit a new solenoid
- Clear the code, exercise the output with a scan tool and road test to confirm the fix
