Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Sensor communication faults are almost always a connection problem, so prove the wiring before ordering parts.

What does it mean?

B1413 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: SIS (Side Impact Sensor) Rear-Passenger Communication error .

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning lamp on and staying on after the bulb check
  • Side and curtain protection on that side is disabled and will not deploy
  • Fault may be intermittent, setting only over rough roads or after heavy rain
  • Code appears soon after interior trim, seat or audio installation work
  • No other electrical symptom, the vehicle otherwise drives normally

Likely causes

  • Water entering the rear sill or C pillar area and corroding the sensor connector, which is one of the most common origins of this fault
  • Open circuit or high resistance in either of the two communication wires between the module and the sensor
  • Connector left unlocked or damaged after rear seat, sill trim or interior panel removal
  • Sensor bolts loose, so the unit is not solidly attached to the body structure
  • Internal electronics failure in the rear right side impact sensor
  • Incorrect or non matching replacement sensor that will not answer the module correctly
  • Fault in the restraint control module port that polls the satellite sensors

How to fix it

  1. Switch the ignition off, disconnect the battery and wait the specified discharge time before disturbing any restraint connector
  2. Lift the rear sill trim and check for damp carpet or standing water, then find and fix the leak before anything else
  3. Unplug the sensor and inspect both connector halves for green pins, water, spread terminals or an unlatched lock
  4. Measure continuity and resistance of both communication wires from the sensor connector back to the control module, wiggling the harness as you measure
  5. Verify the sensor mounting bolts are tight to specification against clean bare metal
  6. Swap the sensor with the matching one on the other side, where the part number allows, to see whether the fault follows the unit
  7. Fit a correct new sensor, perform any required configuration, then clear the codes and confirm the lamp goes out and stays out on a road test
