What does it mean?

B1417 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: SIS (Side Impact Sensor) Rear-Passenger Wrong ID .

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning lamp illuminated, typically right after interior or accident repair work
  • Rear right side and curtain protection disabled
  • Code sets again as soon as it is cleared, always as current
  • Fault first noticed after a salvage or non specified part was installed
  • Vehicle otherwise behaves completely normally

Likely causes

  • Sensor with the wrong part number fitted at the rear right location
  • Rear left and rear right sensors installed in each other's positions during trim or seat work
  • Used sensor from a different model, body style or equipment level
  • Restraint control module replaced and never coded to this vehicle's sensor set
  • Poor or corroded connection distorting the identification data exchange
  • Sensor with internal damage reporting a corrupted identifier

How to fix it

  1. Disconnect the battery and observe the specified reserve discharge time before touching any restraint connector
  2. Read the part number on the installed sensor and compare it against the correct number for this vehicle and this exact position
  3. Confirm the rear left and rear right sensors have not been fitted the wrong way round
  4. Where the module has been replaced or reprogrammed, run the configuration routine so it expects the correct sensor set
  5. Inspect the connector under the sill or pillar trim for corrosion, water and unlatched locks that could corrupt the data
  6. Install a correctly specified new sensor and torque it to the body structure as required
  7. Clear the memory, run the system self test and verify the warning lamp goes out and stays out
