Main Blower Motor Relay Circuit Short to Battery

Jump to the fix

Severity

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Remove the blower relay and see whether the blower stops, which quickly separates a welded relay from a wiring short

What does it mean?

B2510 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Right Headlamp High Circuit Short to Ground .

Symptoms

  • The blower runs continuously, even with the ignition off, and drains the battery
  • The blower cannot be switched off from the climate controls
  • The blower does not run at all once the module protects the output
  • The blower runs only at full speed with no speed control
  • The relay in the fuse box is hot or clicks repeatedly

Likely causes

  • Blower relay control wire shorted to a live feed inside the fuse box loom
  • Relay with welded contacts holding the blower supply permanently on
  • Water entering the fuse or relay box and bridging the control pin to a supply pin
  • Corroded relay socket terminals making an unintended connection
  • Aftermarket accessory wired into the blower relay circuit
  • Loom damage behind the dash where the blower control wiring runs
  • Failed relay drive output inside the climate control or body control module

How to fix it

  1. Remove the blower relay and see whether the blower stops, which quickly separates a welded relay from a wiring short
  2. Swap the relay with an identical unit from a non critical circuit as a test
  3. With the relay removed and the system off, measure the control pin at the socket for unwanted voltage
  4. Check the relay socket and the fuse box for water ingress, corrosion and damaged terminals
  5. Test the control wire from the socket back to the module for a short to a supply circuit
  6. Inspect the blower motor and its resistor or speed control unit, since a failed control unit can also hold the circuit live
  7. Repair the wiring or replace the relay, and replace the module only when the fault is proven to originate there
