What does it mean?
P3410 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Cylinder 2 Deactivation/Intake Valve Control Circuit Performance . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.
Symptoms
- Malfunction indicator lamp on, usually only once the engine is hot
- Brief misfire or shudder as the engine changes cylinder mode
- Ticking from the valvetrain that varies with load and oil temperature
- Rough idle and a flat spot at light throttle
- Fuel economy drops because the module stops using the economy mode
- Symptoms return quickly after clearing codes if the oil condition is not addressed
Likely causes
- Low oil level or oil pressure below what the deactivation system requires
- Incorrect oil viscosity for the engine
- Sludge or varnish restricting the feed to the cylinder 2 lifter
- Clogged screen in the lifter oil manifold
- Solenoid sticking, slow or worn so it does not deliver full flow
- High resistance in the control circuit limiting solenoid current
- Collapsed or sticking deactivation lifter, or a worn cam lobe
How to fix it
- Check oil level, viscosity and service history, and change the oil and filter if it is overdue or contaminated
- Measure actual oil pressure at idle and at raised rpm against specification
- Compare the commanded and actual deactivation state in live data on a road test
- Measure solenoid resistance and check the circuit for excessive voltage drop
- Remove and inspect the lifter oil manifold screens for debris and clean or replace them
- Replace the solenoid or manifold if it is sticking or contaminated, then re-evaluate
- Inspect the deactivation lifter and camshaft lobe if the fault returns with good oil pressure
