What does it mean?

P3418 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Cylinder 3 Deactivation/Intake Valve Control Circuit Performance . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.

Symptoms

  • MIL (check engine lamp) usually lights after the engine warms up fully
  • Shudder or a jolt as the engine tries to enter or leave the reduced-cylinder mode
  • Rough idle and cylinder 3 misfire that comes and goes
  • Distinct valve train tick that varies with oil temperature
  • Fuel economy drops once the system locks itself out
  • Fault may disappear after an oil change and return as the oil ages

Likely causes

  • Low oil level, degraded oil or an overdue oil change starving the actuator of clean pressure
  • Incorrect oil viscosity, which is the single most common cause of slow switching
  • Restricted oil feed passage, blocked screen or sludge inside the oil control valve
  • Sticking switching lifter or roller finger follower on cylinder 3 that will not latch or release
  • Solenoid spool moving sluggishly due to varnish build-up
  • Insufficient oil pressure from a worn pump or a faulty pressure control solenoid
  • Excessive valve train wear that changes the mechanical response the module measures

How to fix it

  1. Check oil level and condition and confirm the correct viscosity was used at the last service
  2. Read freeze frame and note the oil temperature and rpm at which the fault set
  3. Command the solenoid on and off with the scan tool and observe whether engine behaviour and live data change at all
  4. Measure real oil pressure with a mechanical gauge, hot, at idle and at raised rpm
  5. Remove the solenoid, inspect the screen and bore for varnish and debris, and clean or replace it
  6. If the hydraulic side is good, inspect the cylinder 3 switching lifter and rocker for wear or sticking
  7. Change oil and filter after the repair, then run several full warm-up cycles to confirm the code stays away
